My Classroom Website

Welcome to Ms. T Martin's Class Webpage!!!

Welcome students and parents - I hope you will find this website useful for projects, assignments, research and resources for the Gifted Enrichment Elective class at CGW! laugh

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the new school year!  I am very excited about the opportunity to provide enrichment activities for the gifted students at Carter G. Woodson Middle School! A new school year is an exciting time for children and for teachers.  It is a time for making new friends, taking part in new activities, and learning new skills.  Together, you and I have a common goal – to help your child be a successful learner.  As a parent, you know the most about your child’s likes, dislikes, and unique learning style.  I hope you will share this type of information with me so that we can be a seamless team working together for the academic achievement of your child.

The enrichment program is offered as an elective to all identified academically gifted students in grades 6-8.  Continuance in the gifted program will be based on a nine weeks evaluation of your child’s academic progress.  In order to remain in the CGW gifted enrichment class, your child must maintain a C average in each of the four core academic subjects, as well as this class.  Students will be graded on the following:

  • Classwork
  • Tests/Projects
  • Participation

Since the Gifted Enrichment class is an Elective, it is not a core subject class.  We do academic enrichment experiences and projects for their core classes.  My focus is on Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Critical Thinking.  We work in groups and teams for many things throughout the school year and that is part of their grade.

Throughout the year, I will send home notices announcing enrichment programs available through nearby colleges, the Math and Science Center, etc.  Please read over these materials carefully so that you can decide if it would benefit your child to take advantage of these opportunities.

For 8th grade students currently in, or who have completed, Algebra, there will be an opportunity to apply to Appomattox Regional Governor’s School and/or Maggie Walker Governor’s School this fall – if that’s a goal of theirs.  Hopewell Public Schools has also teamed up with John Tyler Community College for a dual-enrollment program that qualified 8th graders will be able to apply for in the spring.  This program allows students to take college credit classes while they’re at HHS in order to graduate high school with college credits.

The supplies for my class will be:  a pencil and composition books.  Students may also want to have a hand-held sharpener, scissors, colored pencils, markers (skinny or fat), black Sharpie markers, and a USB flashdrive- unless they have a Gmail account and can use Google docs for their typed assignments.  We will also need tissues as the school year progresses.  Any tissue donations for the class would be greatly appreciated!

Some of the things we will do in Gifted Enrichment this year will be:

  • DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Essay and other writing contests
  • Novel studies
  • Independent Units of study
  • Simulation Games (depending on the grade level) such as Mystery Disease, Think Tank, Science Sleuths, etc.
  • Jury Trials in the Classroom
  • Passion Project
  • STEM Activities

And more…

My room number is 515, which is right down the hallway from the “Wildcat Café.”  Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  You may reach me at 541-6404 or tmartin@hopewell.k12.va.us.  I also have a webpage located @ mstmartin.educatorpages.com where I will have assignments and links available.
